AVIX Laser Bird Deterrent FAQs
You Asked, We Answered
WHY IS AVIX THE BEST LASER BIRD DETERRENT?
Bird Control Group are invested into performance trial, finding the most effective bird control over many different bird species in various applications, including field trials, commercial development and renewables, working with clients and research stations to develop the best alternative to humanely deter birds. Using fat beam technology with app programming, AVIX has user integration like no other. Deployed across 110 countries has been proven as the world leading deterrent system, silent, humane, sustainable, trustworthy.
AVIX by Bird Control Group has been used for over a decade for bird control, backed by research, tried, tested and proven.
HOW DOES THE AVIX AUTONOMIC LASER BIRD DETERRENT WORK?
Birds perceive AVIX approaching laser beam as a physical danger - and see a permanent object - like a large moving stick and disperse to seek safety. In contrast to conventional deterrence methods, birds will not become accustomed to the AVIX 16 programmable patterns. They will consider the area as unsafe and will find a safer environment to forage.
AVIX products don’t detect the birds, they work preventively not reactively. We don't recommend the use of AI in a class3b laser system.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AVIX PRODUCTS COMPARED TO OTHER BIRD CONTROL METHODS?
In many situations existing methods (netting, shooting, sound) are not suitable, feasible, sustainable or effective on the long term.
AVIX technology offers a unique solution for large area bird control:
• Low costs per surface unit (not so with netting or shooting);
• Easy to deploy (Not so with netting);
• Permanent / autonomous solution (Autonomic)- (not so with shooting);
• Humane technique / positive perception (not so with shooting);
• Low environmental impact: no noise, no pollution, low visual presence (not so with shooting & sound);
• No habituation: birds do not get used to the laser beam (not so with sound);
• Most importantly, AVIX is the most affordable solution to covering a large crop growing area.
WHICH BIRD SPECIES REACT TO THE LASER BEAM?
Most birds respond immediately to the laser beam. It has been proven that AVIX products effectively reduce nuisance caused by many birds including:
• Gulls
• Crows
• Pigeons
• Ducks
• Geese
• Starlings
• Swifts
• Herons
• Cockatoos
• Galahs
• Currawongs
• Swallows
• Rosellas
• Cormorant
• Pelican
DO BIRDS GET ACCUSTOMED TO AVIX LASER TECHNOLOGY?
Since the laser beam of AVIX is a dynamic ‘threat’ approaching from different angles at random moments, pest birds do not get used to it and show immediate response by flying away. After repeated experiences with AVIX Autonomic, pest birds tend to avoid the area where the laser is active.
AVIX has unique integrations that provide complexity, so the birds do not become accustomed to the patterns unlike others with less capabilities.
ARE LASERS EFFECTIVE DURING THE DAY?
AVIX laser technology is absolutely effective during daytime. We recommend 3-5 ha+ per unit for effective control. During night/low light conditions AVIX will cover 21ha with line of sight
WHAT IS THE RANGE OF LASERS TO DISPERSE BIRDS
The range of effective bird dispersal depends on multiple local factors.
Light conditions
AVIX Autonomic units have a high laser output power, recommended for use during bright light conditions.
Distance and beam angle
The laser beam has reach up to 350mt in bright light conditions is ideal for deterring birds. Some sources state 1000mt, this is not true in Australian conditions. The unit should be mounted at adequate height which then projects down on an angle looking into the area. Effective cover (recommended 3-5ha+) should be determined by bird species, bird pressure, environmental factors and history.
Local environmental conditions
Built in the Netherlands to withstand Nordic conditions, will not have any issues in the Australian sun.
ARE AVIX LASERS SAFE TO USE?
AVIX can be safely deployed as long as the operator complies fully with the provided safety instructions and follow local regulations. Safety is a top priority at Bird Beam. AVIX safety is world class, top of the range laser deterrent technology, complying with the highest safety standards for laser equipment, we work closely with our clients with policy and procedures. A free laser safety course is mandatory for all our clients, using an online platform at AVIX Academy.
Bird Beam recommends laser safety glasses as part of PPE.
WHAT LASER CLASS IS THE AVIX?
The laser class depends on the amount of energy transported within the laser beam (laser power) and the wavelength (colour) of the laser beam. The unique combination of laser source and optics generate a laser beam that is classified as laser class 3B. The output power varies per product and lies between 5 and 499 mW (milliWatts).
WHY ARE GREEN LASERS BETTER FOR BIRDS?
Birds see the green laser wavelength best and therefore the bird dispersal is most effective. Red is not an effective color.
CAN LASERS BE USED DURING NESTING SEASON?
Bird Beam advises not to use lasers during the nesting season, it is illegal to remove a nesting bird without permits. The laser should be used as a preventive tool for keeping birds away. If birds are already nesting, dispersing them is very difficult with any method. We recommend installing our equipment at least 1 – 2 months before the nesting season to have the maximum effect. The area MUST be cleaned down, so the birds don't recognize the area to be previously habitable.
OUR PROPERTY IS UNDER A FLIGHT PATH..
AVIX is fully programmable and set only by waypoints, this governs the movements and the path in which the laser will travel, which prevents uncontrolled projection to aircraft or at areas with human activity. We never project towards the open sky. The laser is mounted high above the area, and projects down at the field or open space. AVIX technology is a trusted brand at major airports worldwide.
CAN YOU GIVE 100% GUARANTEE ON THE EFFECT OF LASER TECHNOLOGY?
It is widely known there is no magic bullet when it comes to bird control, we cannot give a 100 % guarantee on the effect. In most situations, we have seen reduction in bird numbers between 70 % - 100 %, taking into account external environmental/seasonal factors which can influence the perceived outcome, also depending on the location and situation according to our research. We offer many user stories and testimonials for a reference; is some cases we can also offer direct references from clients drawing from their own experience. Bird deterrents must be used as part of a pest management policy and not in isolation. So, you must apply more pressure back to the birds than you are receiving.
DO YOU ACCEPT RETURNS?
Customers have specific legal rights under the Australian Consumer Law in respect of goods and services purchased from Bird Beam. As a business we are meeting our obligations within the Australian Consumer Law. We therefore offer Conditional refunds and replacements.
Details of our return’s guidelines are outlined on our Important Information page
DOES THE LASER POINT IN JUST ONE DIRECTION?
No, AVIX has pan and tilt; can do a 350° rotation, we prefer approx. 240° max for more time on crop.
DO I NEED A PERMIT TO OPERATE
In all States of Australia, you will be required to obtain a permit to operate a handheld laser. The use of handheld lasers is very strictly governed. Tasmanian and WA Government require a laser use permit and registration for all class3B lasers, this includes the AVIX Autonomic and others.
