Easy Way to Calculate Grape Yield Losses in Vineyards due to Birds.

Updated: Sep 10

Print this off and work through it with the team!

Simplified Formula for Grape Yield Loss (based on Tonnage per Hectare):

Example:

Let’s calculate an example using this formula.

  1. Total Yield per Hectare: You estimate a total yield of 10 tonne per hectare for your vineyard.

  2. Bird Damage Estimate: After assessing the damage, you estimate that 15% of the crop has been lost to birds.

  3. Calculate Yield Loss:

    Yield Loss=10tonnes/ha×0.15=1.5tonnes/ha

  4. Financial Loss: Assuming the price per tonne of grapes is $2,000:

Financial Loss = 1.5tonnes/ha × 2,000 = $3,000

Conclusion:

In this case, you're losing $3,000 per hectare due to bird damage. This simplified formula helps you directly calculate both the yield and financial losses, making it easier to justify an investment in bird deterrent systems.
